Parents often describe parenting in terms of extremes: It can be amazing, rewarding, extremely difficult, and exhausting all at the same time. There is no doubt about it…parenting is hard work! We often meet with parents who feel frustrated with their child’s behavior but unsure of how to change it. We also work with parents who describe feeling disappointed in their interactions with their children and/or helpless and exhausted. Parents may find themselves engaging in frequent arguments with their child or teen, delivering empty threats, and/or “walking on eggshells” around their own child/teen in order to prevent problem behaviors. These types of interactions aren’t beneficial for anyone, and they can take the joy out of parenting.
Wherever you are in your parenting journey, you don’t have to do it alone. Whether there are specific behaviors that you’d like to address or you aren’t quite sure where to begin, we are here to help. We provide parent coaching services in order to help you improve your parent-child interactions and feel more confident in guiding and responding to your child’s behaviors. We also offer individual counseling for children and teens which you can read more about on our Counseling page.
Parent Coaching with Dr. Tara Delach
Dr. Tara has years of experience working with families and believes everyone is capable of making long-lasting changes in their parenting journey. It comes down to two key elements:
Taking small steps every day. Tara will meet you where you are – whether you are a parent looking for guidance regarding a specific problem behavior (temper tantrums) or a parent feeling completely overwhelmed with the day-to-day stressors of family life – she can help you create new habits that are practical and match your lifestyle.
Learning how to handle life’s challenges. Many of us resort to ineffective parenting practices when faced with other life stressors (no one wants to be screaming at their kids!) Or worse yet we completely give up on our goals and end up feeling worse than when we started. Tara will teach you strategies for maintaining the positive changes that you’ve made even when life throws you curve balls.
How Parent Coaching Works
Coaching is an interactive and collaborative process and 100% depends on your goals. The focus of coaching may include: enhancing relationships, improving self-care, or learning new strategies for preventing and managing challenging behaviors.
Coaching services may include, but are not limited to:
- Psychoeducation regarding positive parenting practices and developing positive parent-child relationships
- Teaching and practicing evidence-based strategies for encouraging the behaviors that you want to see more of (e.g. following directions, getting ready on time) while preventing challenging behaviors (e.g. whining, aggression, talking back, tantrums)
- Developing individualized parenting plans that consist of very practical strategies to address your family’s needs
- Problem-solving any challenges related to implementing parenting plans
- In-home/community-based observation, feedback, and planning sessions
- Functional behavior assessments
